The strategic partnership with Société Suisse des Explosifs, a Swiss multinational company with 130 years of experience in the field, has brought ELTEK access to technology and methodology that is unique in Southeast Europe. This collaboration goes beyond knowledge transfer, encompassing continuous exchange of expertise, joint research programs, and access to the industry’s most advanced research tools.
Europe’s Only Detonation Chamber
The crowning achievement of the Chemical Engineering Department is the development and operation of Europe’s first and only Explosives Testing Chamber. This pioneering facility, created in collaboration with the University of Western Macedonia, enables detailed analysis and characterization of explosive materials with unprecedented precision.
The Detonation Chamber measures with exceptional accuracy the detonation velocity, released energy, oxygen balance, and analyzes the complete qualitative and quantitative characteristics of gases produced during detonation. This data is critical for optimizing formulations, ensuring safety, and adapting products to the specific requirements of each application.
The existence of this facility has established ELTEK as a reference point for explosives development in Europe, attracting interest from research centers and industries across the continent. The chemical engineering team uses data from the chamber for continuous improvement of existing products and development of new composite explosives that address evolving market needs.
Next-Generation Product Development
ELTEK’s chemical engineering team works daily on developing and improving a comprehensive range of explosive products. From traditional ANFO products to advanced emulsions in the EXPLO GEL series, each formulation is the result of extensive experimentation, testing, and optimization.
The explosive emulsions developed by the department cover a wide range of applications. EXPLO GEL 100 is ideal for surface applications and can function as a booster for other explosives. EXPLO GEL 200 combines high detonation velocity with exceptional safety, suitable for both underground and surface operations. For the most demanding applications, EXPLO GEL HYDRA 6000 offers premium performance in hard rock and high-moisture conditions.
Special mention deserves EXPLO GEL 750S, an innovative product developed with focus on safety and effectiveness. This booster-sensitive product offers excellent water resistance and has been designed to minimize handling risks without sacrificing performance.
Innovations in Bulk Loading
ELTEK pioneered the introduction of bulk loading in underground mines in the Balkans, a technology requiring exceptionally sophisticated chemical knowledge and precision in formulations. The chemical engineering department developed special compositions that can be produced and applied on-site with mobile units, adapting to the specific geological conditions of each project.
The collaboration with Australian company Dyno Nobel for uphole bulk loading implementation represents another example of the department’s innovative approach. This advanced technique, which ELTEK is the first company to implement in the Balkans, requires formulations with specific rheological properties and stability, characteristics achieved through careful selection of raw materials and precise control of production parameters.
